Part Two: Historical Understanding of Setting

Part A:

8a35697r.jpg
Observe:
1. Describe what you see.
I see an open field with a church, trees, a dirt road, and a sign bearing the words "Jesus Christ". The church and sign are made of wood, and there is a cross on the roof on the church.
2. What do you notice first?
The first thing I notice is the large tree in the center of the picture. Then I notice the big sign, and then the church.
3. What, if any, words do you see?
I can see "Jesus Christ" and "Friend of God".

Reflect:
1. Who do you think was the audience for this image?
I think that the audience consists of the religous type. This is a photo of a church, and it was most likely used to get people to come to it or to spread the christian faith.
2. What’s missing from this image?
The element that is missing from the photograph is the people. Usually, churches are frequented by people at most points of the day, but this seems nearly deserted. Perhaps this photo was used to draw people to come to the church.
3. When do you think it was made?
I think that it was made around the late 1930's-1940's, maybe 1941, because that was the time of the Great Depression and that is what we're learning about.

Question:
1. Who?
I wondered who went to this church. Was is segregated or not? A white church, African American church, or both?
2. Why?
I wondered why there were no people pictured near the church. Was it out of business, or was the picture just taken at an off time? Were all of the people inside, or was it deserted?
3. What?
I wondered what the sign said. I could make out the "Jesus Christ" and "Friend of God", but I couldn't tell what the rest of it said.

Observe:
1. Describe what you see.
I see two men standing by the tail of a plane. There are other planes behind them. The sky is cloudy. The men are dressed in baggy overalls, undershirts, work boots, caps, goggles, and headsets, and one is carrying some sort of bag. The other man is leaning against the tail of the plane.
2. What did you notice first?
The first thing I noticed was the bright, striped tail of the plane, numbered 423 0ED. Then I noticed the two men beside it, and then the planes in the background.
3. What people and objects are shown?
Several planes are shown, and two men, which I presume to be pilots, are standing next to the tail of one of the planes.

Reflect:
1. If someone made this today, what would be different?
A lot of aspects would be different if this picture was taken today. First of all, the planes would not look the same. The planes would be of the more modern type, because we don't fly any planes that look like the one in the photograph today. The men would also be wearing more modernized flight suits, because the ones photographed don't exsist anymore either.
2. What’s happening in the image?
In this image, two men, who are most likely pilots, are talking by the tail of a plane.
3. What can you learn from examining this image?
I can learn about flight travel in the past from this image. I can see what the planes looked like, what equipment was used, and how the people of that era dressed.

Question:
1. Who?
I wondered who the two men were and what was their role? Were they pilots, or maybe engineers?
2. What?
I wondered what the men were talking about. Perhaps it was something about the plane?
3. Where?
I wondered where this was taking place. Where did the plane fly in from? Where was it going?

eagle's_store.jpg
eagle's_store.jpg

Observe:
1. Describe what you see.
This is a photograph of a large convience store. The name of the store is Eagle's Golden Jubilee. I also see that the store is not very busy and that there are no people to be seen.
2. What do you notice first?
The first thing I noticed was sign sign that read "Eagles Golden Jubilee", then "Eagle's Store, and then the rest of the store front.
3. What other details can you see?
I can see that the sign on the store says 50th year of business in Belma. This sign shows that the store has been in business for many years.

Reflect:
1. Why do you think this image was made?
I think that this image was made to show the effect on businesses during the Great Depression.
2. What can you learn from examining this image?
What I can learn from examining this picture is that many people couldn't afford to go stores during this time period. The sign states that the store has been in business for a long time, but clearly the store wasn't very successful when the photo was being taken because of the lack of customers.
3. What’s missing from this image?
People are missing from this image. Normally, on a busy street like this, the sidewalk would be bustling with people. However, there is no one walking the sidewalks and no one entering or exiting the store.

Question:
1. Who?
I wondered, who ran this store? This person was probably highly successful before this picture was taken due to many years the store was in business, but his business most likely hit a downfall when the depression occured.
2. When?
I wondered when during the depression this photo was taken. I wondered this because it could show when the worst part of the time period occured.
3. Why?
I wonder why there aren't many people walking in the streets. Did the people have too little money to shop, or did the store raise its prices during the tough times?

Part B:

Bethlehem-Fairfield shipyards, Baltimore, Maryland. A drinking fountain
Bethlehem-Fairfield shipyards, Baltimore, Maryland. A drinking fountain

Observe:
1. Describe what you see.
In this photograph, I can see a water fountain by a window that is for white people only. One window is broken, there is writing all over the windows and wall, and there is a garbage can nearby.
2. What do you notice first?
The first thing I noticed was the dark black sign that says "WHITE" that is next to the water fountain.
3. What, if any, words do you see?
The most prominent word I can see is "white", which is pirnted on the sign, but there are also some other words written around the fountain, such as "water" and "soup".

Reflect:
1. What’s happening in the image?
This image is a great example of the segregation occuring during the Great Depression. The water fountain is marked only for whites, prohibiting any other races from using a simple fountain.
2. What can you learn from examining this image?
I can gain a lot of information about how strict the segregation laws were during the Great Depression from this photograph. African Americans were not even allowed to drink from the same water fountain as the white people, as depicted in this image.
3. If someone made this today, what would be different?
The instance represented in the image would never occur in modern times. There is virtually no segregation in the United States anymore, or at least not this severe, so you could not really see a fountain marked for white people only.

Question:
1. How?
I wondered how this made the African Americans feel. They were being rejected in their own country, constantly discriminated against and barely thought of as people. How would an African American feel when they saw this whites-only water fountain?
2. What?
I wondered what would happen if an African American drank from this fountain. Would it be a huge penalty, or just a minor one? I am not farmiliar with the rigor of the punishment for the segregation laws of the Great Depression.
3. Where?
I wondered where this fountain was located. The website said that it was in Baltimore, Maryland, but I wondered what type of building it was on. It looks to be outside of some sort of factory.

Sign above moving picture theater, Waco, Texas
Sign above moving picture theater, Waco, Texas

Observe:
1. Describe what you see.
I see a sign for "The Gem Theatre", which was exclusively for colored people. There is also a picture of a bottle of Coca Cola above the Gem Theatre sign. The sign rests above a metal overhang and behind it is a brick wall.
2. What do you see first?
The first thing I see is "The Gem Theatre" in big, bold letters, and then I see the Coca Cola bottle, and then "Exclusive Colored Theatre".
3. What, if any, words do you see?
I see "The Gem Theatre" and "Exclusive Colored Theatre".

Reflect:
1. What’s happening in the image?
Segregation is in full swing in this image. The white people cannot even stand to watch a movie with the colored people; there are separate theaters for the colored people and the white people.
2. What can you learn from examining this image?
I can learn a lot about the extremity of segregation during the time of the Great Depression. I can also learn that they did in fact have movie theaters and Coca Cola back then.
3. If someone made this today, what would be different?
This picture would be totally different today. Our movie theaters are for all people; there is no segregation. This photograph could not be taken today because functional segregated theaters do not exsist.

Question:
1. What?
I wondered what the punishment would be if a colored person attempted to get into a white-only movie theatre, and then I wondered if a white person would get punished if they went to a colored movie theatre. Would they get punished by the law or simply by the colored people in the theatre?
2. Why?
Why did people go so far as to separate the theaters of the races? Why couldn't you just sit at the opposite end of the theatre? What was so bad about the colored people that the whites could not even watch a movie near them?
3. How?
I wondered how many colored-only movie theaters there were compared to white-only movie theaters. Were there more white-only? Or was it about equal?

negro.jpg
negro.jpg

Observe:
1. What, if any, words do you see?
I can see the words "Colered Waiting Room", "Private Property, No Parking, Driving Through or Turning Around", "Bingo tonite", "Good Housekeeping", "Carolina Coach Company", and "True Story, Hitlers Love Life Revealed".
2. What is the physical setting?
The setting is in a train station. There is an African American man in the foremost section of the photo, near the colored waiting room.
3. What people and objects are shown?
There are a few African Americans, a train, and signs for a colored waiting room and other advertisements.

Reflect:
1. When do you think it was made?
I can infer that this photograoh was taken during or after World War II, because there's a sign bearing the words "Hitler's Love Life Revealed".
2. What can you learn from examining this image?
I learned that segregation existed everywhere at this time, even in a train station. It is a sad fact that, being an African American, you can never escape the ridicule, even when at the train station trying to escape from where you live.
3. If someone made this today, what would be different?
If someone took this photograph today, the train would be more efficient and modern. On a higher note, all of the signs would be different as there is no segregation anymore and we have different current affairs than in the 1930's and 1940's.

Question:
1. Where?
I wondered which train station this took place at and which state this segregation was occurring in.
2. When?
I wondered which year during or after World War II this photograph was taken.
3. Why?
I wondered why the man allowed this picture to be taken so close to him. I also wondered why the photographer targeted a train station for his image when segregation was prominent in most other places during this time.
